Granada is a wonderful town, full of colors and treasures but the weather there could be very hot, and humid because of its proximity with the lake Cocibolca. It was the case when we visited Nicaragua in May. The temperatures went up to 38°C during the day. Having a place to stay with a pool is much needed!

We were lucky to spend 3 days at Tribal Hotel: an oasis in the middle of Granada.

But, the Tribal Hotel is not only a place with a pool…

When I first heard about this hotel, it was in a magazine listing the most beautiful boutique hotels in Central America. There is just one thing I can say now: this article was 100% true!

At Tribal Hotel every detail counts. Every piece of decoration has a story. All together, they create a wonderful atmosphere! We loved the contrast of the greens, the turquoise of the refreshing pool with the black floor and the wooden furnitures. The patio reminded me of some Ryads in Marrakech’s Medina: a place of life!

It could be the perfect place to read a book, work on your computer if needed. It is also the perfect place to relax all day and do nothing.

We felt so good that is was not easy to find the courage to go outside and visit Granada, but the town is pretty and definitely worth a walk. Being in Granada is also an excellent occasion to take a taxi to visit the Masaya Volcano National park and see its lava lake, or take a hike on the Mombacho Volcano.

For now, let me take you to the best sunset spot we found in Granada: the top of Guadaloupe Church.

It looks like the whole place has changed. It is still so beautiful.

We stayed for 2 nights in a confortable suite with its own large terrace where we had a quiet and delicious breakfast just the two of us.

And we also had our breakfast on the main space one day, because we love experiencing different options!

The breakfast is different every day so you won’t get bored if you decide to stay for an entire week!

Tribal Hotel is an amazing place, very well located in Granada. The pool is definitely a plus to cool down after a day in town or even just to relax all day if this is your plan. The staff was super friendly and discreet. We liked the 2 breakfasts we had during our stay. What we loved the most was the owners’ taste for design and the atmosphere they’ve created there! The hotel really deserves its Boutique hotel reputation!

Only 30 kilometers from Granada, the Masaya Volcano National Park is the first, and largest national park in the country, consisting of a volcanic caldera with two volcanoes and five craters. Its crater “Santiago” has an altitude of 635 meters above sea level, and continuously emits large amounts of sulfur dioxide.

The park opens its doors for the daytime visit and it is also possible to take a short night tour, this is what we did. We took a taxi from Granada, arrived to the park before sunset. This visit is available without reservation, from 5 PM to around 8 PM. You just need to get the road main entrance; if there are people or groups before you, you will need to stand in line, as visitors are allowed to enter and go to the crater in order of arrival. The vehicles are parked one after the other next to the main road. The entrance fee for the night tour is US$10 per person.

The light was amazing when we reached the crater : we could see the golden rays of the sun through the volcano’s smoke.

The eruptions have had a dramatic impact on the surroundings. Rocks and volcanic ashes still cover the area surrounding the volcanoes. The nature is rough yet peaceful. Different types of vegetation appeared after the eruptions. We walked around the main crater for a while. The sky’s colors and appearances were changing a lot and created interesting landscapes photographies!

There are several trails that lead to the other craters and the Tzinaconostoc Cave in which hundreds of bats house. Those trails distance vary between 1.4 and 5.9 kilometers, but some were closed to the public at this time, and we didn’t have a lot of time to explore because we decided to arrive before sunset, so we just walked around different spots nearby.

Night time Visit

Every night the park offers a spectacle that astonishes its nocturnal visitors: the appreciation of the so-called “lava lake” that can be observed from the very shore of the crater. The crater maintains an incandescence inside due to a persistent lava lake, reason why it was object of veneration by the inhabitants of the area before the arrival of the Spanish colonizers, who baptized the active volcano with the name of “The Mouth of Hell”.

The spectacle is rare and breathtaking: the sky is getting dark, allowing you to see thousands of stars and, from the edge of the crater, right into the bottom of it, you are able to see an amazing lava lake that move with its incandescent color. The contemplation lasts a few more minutes, after that time you will be asked by guides and park ranger to leave the area and go to the main gate.

Let’s be clear: there is not much to do in Playa Popoyo, especially if you don’t surf, that’s our case. But because we love the ocean and the tranquility we wanted to stay there for a few days and just Do Nothing!

Playa Popoyo is, according to us, so much more beautiful and wild than San Juan Del Sur and a very good choice to settle down for a few days.

What does Do Nothing consist of to us?

Spending time together, all day long: at bed when we wake up, reading a book on a hammock during the afternoon, walking along the ocean in the morning, watching sunset at the end of the day and the stars at night. Doing yoga, meditating. Living the moment

Suyo cabañas has 6 private cabañas perched above the sand, all offering ocean views.

Each cabaña has a private patio, hammock, and sink. The cabañas are surrounding with palms trees around an outdoor shower that create a cool tropical vibe.

Guests share kitchen, dining and bathroom facilities as the terrace facing the ocean.

And because everywhere we go we make a new friend, Suyo has its mascot too.

Even if you are not a surfer, or maybe if you just want to give it a try, Popoyo is a beautiful place to rest and ressource for a few days!
